Abstract

We compared fertility potential measurements by the zona-free hamster egg penetration assay with the in vitro fertilization of human eggs. Spermatozoa from 15 husbands participating in an in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer problem was evaluated for their ability to fertilize zona free hamster egg. The average fertilization percentage was 39.3(range 0 ¡ 95.2%). In two cases, a positive fertility assessment was obtained in the absence of fertilization of the wives`s eggs attributable to egg immaturity. In four cases, a negative fertility assessment was attribute to the decrease of the motility of prozen semen at thawing. These results indicate that hamster penetration assay is highly correlated with the fertilization of human eggs in vitro.
